Known for the slogan "Where the Turf Meets the Surf", Del Mar race track made its debut in 1937 thanks to a partnership between entertainment celebrities Pat O'Brien, Jimmy Durante, Charles S. Howard, Oliver Hardy and Bing Crosby, who was at the gate to personally greet the fans when the track opened in 1937.
The track gained notoriety in the 1940's for serving as summer playground for many Hollywood stars, and for hosting the Bing Crosby Handicap, a race first held at Del Mar in 1946. Throughout the late 1940s and 1950s the track became the Saratoga of the West for summer racing. The track featured large purses for many stakes, over half of which were won by legendary jockey, Bill Shoemaker.
Currently the San Diego Recetrack hosts some of the biggest events in the state, including the popular Pacific Classic, Eddie Read Stakes and Del Mar Oaks.
